As per the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, the practice of massage therapy is “the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissues and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or relieve pain.

Areas of the body being treated are always discussed and agreed upon between the patient and the RMT before the massage begins. An RMT should never massage an area you are uncomfortable with or an area you have not given your consent to.

No. You can undress to your comfort level; your RMT will only uncover the area being worked on at that time. Your privacy will continually be maintained as RMTs are trained to do so through proper draping protocols (covering/uncovering an area) using sheets and a blanket.

Not necessarily; some patients experience this, while others do not. It can depend on the pressure used, techniques applied and how your body responds to the massage in general. Your RMT will communicate with you about your preferences during the treatment.

It is best to reschedule your appointment or book at another time when the concern may be resolved, if you have the following:

  • Blood clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Cancer patients receiving radiation.
  • Contagious conditions (i.e., conjunctivitis, influenza)
  • Fever
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Severe medical conditions requiring emergency care

Common Questions

What are the Most Common Areas of Pain

How Massage Therapy Can Help

Massage Therapy

As a Registered Massage Therapist, Lisa Pasquariello, RMT, CKTT, often observes that patients frequently experience tension and pain in specific areas, which can vary depending on occupational stress or physical activities. Lower back and neck discomfort are common complaints, often tied to various activities of daily living. Discomfort in the upper and mid-back areas are also frequently reported, which may be due to postural strains or repetitive tasks. Targeted massage therapy can be highly beneficial for these issues, helping to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and reduce stress. It is crucial to customize massage techniques to each individual’s needs, ensuring a therapeutic and relieving experience.

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.
